But maybe it wouldn’t change anything? All three characters sort of embody their own side; it’s not as if simply rearranging the labels would make a difference to their courses of action. Also, in some ways, they were already? In an excruciatingly round-about way? The children of the eyebrows up there are, in their own way, both theoretically in favor of Relena, even if their personal conduct went against her ideals.I think that’s the deal. They all want peace (even Dorothy), but the ways they want to get there are mutually exclusive. Maybe if they could all manage to rally behind a peaceful endeavor in a scenario that did NOT involve fighting, they could get along? It would be interesting to picture them as world leaders outside of the context of war.

Part of the trouble with Gundam Wing is that its focus is so exclusively narrowed on peace vs. war and fighting, and their effects on human nature, that we don’t really get a feeling for how characters/factions feel about anything else. What does Relena think about poverty and social inequality? Capitalism? Class warfare? What does Dorothy have to say about natural resource management and the destruction of the environment? Gender and sex discrimination? How would Treize handle a global economy? Population control? Law enforcement? Crime rates? Education? How do the people of earth in AC 195 feel about having their borders suddenly erased? How does that even work, on a governmental level? Not to mention on a social, cultural, or linguistic level?

Whatever. There are obviously aspects to any sci-fi series that can’t be addressed. But it’s worth thinking about.

I guess if they came up on the docket, I wouldn’t NOT vote for them as the earth-sphere triumvirate-for-life.

This is what I think about all the damn time. This is what I worry about when I’m writing fanfics. How can I bring more verisimilitude to the story? How can I reach into the consciousness of the everyday people through my main characters, even if they are far from the everyday person?

This “mini-essay”, as you say, is awesome.

Let’s have that conversation. What would Relena think about Capitalism and class warfare? More importantly, what would she do about it if something needed to be done? How is she going to manage the weight of the entire Earth and the Colonies on her back? Would Dorothy give a damn about natural resource management? Just how would the world of the Gundam Wing universe handle socioeconomic issues among many other things?

Again, my writer mind is TAKING OVER.
