So with the semester coming to a close, I have a little more free time on my hands. Other than work and finishing up the first draft of my novel for thesis, I won’t have any homework so that means I can read something not assigned! So I have several bookshelves and I fill them not only with books I am required to buy for classes, but also with books compulsively bought for my “future readings” list. I rarely get to them. So this summer, I will be waging war on my bookshelves in order to read as many of those impulse purchases as I can.
First on the list: FLOW: The Cultural Story Behind Menstruation by Elissa Stein and Susan Kim
We’re about to enter strange territory here. I bought this book during the summer last year when it came out because I’ve always been confused over the taboo everyone places on menstruation. Over the centuries it’s been used as a way to categorize women as “deamons” or “impure beings” and many cultures around the world still hold onto the idea that women cannot perform some duties when they are menstruating, because they are dirty at this time.
I don’t get it. Yeah, it can get messy and the side-effects are less than pleasant, but let’s not forget that it is one of two “things” keeping the human race going. It’s a natural occurrence. It’s not a big deal. Why are we so afraid to talk about it?
The cover copy for this book claims to explore these questions and the cultural hoo haw surrounding menstruation and women. So I hope it’ll be a good read. I’ll keep tabs on this book here.
“Dance,” said the Sheep Man. “You gotta dance. As long as the music plays. You gotta dance. Don’t even think why. Start to think, your feet stop. Your feet stop, we get stuck. We get stuck, gotta keep the step. You gotta limber up. You gotta loosen what you bolted down. You gotta use all you got. We know you’re tired, tired and scared. Happens to everyone, okay? Just don’t let your feet stop….You gotta dance. As long as the music plays.”—
Endless Waltz manga...somewhat different from the movie
So, I don’t have this manga, but it would be nice to see because there are several discrepancies between it and the movie/OVA series which sheds a little more light onto certain topics, and it closes out the Gundam Wing saga differently as well. After reading the scripts, I can see where the movie pulled things from, and also perhpas why they changed somethings.
For instance, they open the question if Mariemaia is really Treize’s daughter. In the last few scenes, after Dekim Barton shoots Mariemaia (who was blocking Relena), he says “I can find another Mariemaia. I picked up that girl from the stre—”, and he is shot by a Treize loyalist. This line barely makes it into the movie as Dekim says, “We can always find another Mariemaia”.
So is Mariemaia really the daughter of Treize Khushrenada and Leia Barton? According to this version of EW, no. However, if we read the Episode Zero manga, there is definite evidence towards her being a Khushrenada.
BUT, and excuse my OTP rantings, there is a huge difference in Heero’s end story. As a “summary” from Aboutgundamwing.com says, the last few pages of the manga show:
Int. Meeting hall. Relena stands before a large video screen with the image of the “Mars Terraforming Project” behind her and many people in attendance in the room listening to her speech. In the wings of the stage, wearing dark glasses and a suit and wearing a communication earpiece, is Heero Yuy.
So, if we take this volume as canon (it was written and illustrated by the same people who did the original manga), it means that Heero was originally set to close out the series working as part of Relena’s security team. I can only assume that it’s a private company he’s working for, or his own company, since he isn’t described as wearing the Preventer jacket, just “a suit” and “a communication earpiece”. Well, I can see why they would change his end story for the movie, but this manga ending certainly pleases the fans ^_^ Wish I could get my hands on this manga!
It’s like the entire series was a constant battle between the creators and the staff writers. Pairings, plot holes, leaves nice little pockets for us fans to creep into and exploit with our fanfiction…hehe…
Who's your favorite Gundam Wing character & pairing? :3
Oh without a doubt, Heero and Relena (my OTP!!). If you think objectively about it, they really understand one another, and honestly, I don’t think there is anyone else who could live up to the pedestals they hold each other on!
Though, wouldn’t you believe it, after reading an amazingly good 4xD fic (Revelations by Isis cw), I’ve been converted on that one. I used to hate Dorothy, but now, I see she’s pretty bad ass!
As for those I dislike, I’m not a fan of yaoi (though all the really good fanart seems to be centered around that), and I detest the Wufei/Treize pairing (but it’s amusing to poke fun at). O_O
